Al Ansari Law is pleased to announce the publication in the Houston Journal of International Law of a new article co-authored by Dr. Salman Al-Ansari, and Professor Ilias Bantekas, titled “Addressing Human Rights Risks through Mega-Sporting Legislation: A Comparison between the Russian and Qatari FIFA World Cups.”

The article examines the FIFA World Cup implementing laws adopted by Russia and Qatar and considers how the two host states addressed human rights risks in connection with hosting the tournament. In particular, it compares their approaches to labour reforms and human rights protection and examines the role of mega-sporting events in producing legislative reforms with a longer-term human rights impact.

In relation to Qatar, the article examines the extensive labour reforms and human rights risk assessments undertaken in connection with the FIFA World Cup and considers the tournament within the broader context of Qatar’s development objectives and its intended human rights legacy.
